Virtual threads bear a superficial similarity to green threads in that they are both managed by the JVM rather than the OS, but this is where the similarity ends. They were very much a product of their time, when systems were single-core and OSes didnt have thread support at all.
Now that we know how to create virtual threads let’s see how they work. The two virtual threads run concurrently, and the main thread waits for them to terminate. For now, let’s focus java green threads solely on thread name and execution interleaving. As we said, both projects are still evolving, so the final version of the features might differ from what we will see here.

Mounting a virtual thread means temporarily copying the needed stack frames from the heap to the stack of the carrier thread, and borrowing the carriers stack while it is mounted. Java has had good multi-threading and concurrency capabilities from early on in its evolution and can effectively utilize multi-threaded and multi-core CPUs. Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1 had basic support for platform threads (or https://www.globalcloudteam.com/ Operating System (OS) threads), and JDK 1.5 had more utilities and updates to improve concurrency and multi-threading. JDK 8 brought asynchronous programming support and more concurrency improvements. While things have continued to improve over multiple versions, there has been nothing groundbreaking in Java for the last three decades, apart from support for concurrency and multi-threading using OS threads.

There’s nothing anywhere restricting green threads to a single OS thread. Most modern runtimes will automatically multiplex the green threads into as many OS threads as your computer can run. Java.lang.ThreadGroup is a legacy API for grouping threads that is rarely used in modern applications and unsuitable for grouping virtual threads. We deprecate and degrade it now, and expect to introduce a new thread-organizing construct in the future as part of structured concurrency. Unfortunately, the number of available threads is limited because the JDK implements threads as wrappers around operating system (OS) threads. OS threads are costly, so we cannot have too many of them, which makes the implementation ill-suited to the thread-per-request style.
